But degrees and experience aside, you'll find our staff to be friendly, enthusiastic, and caring -- each one committed to helping you make the healthy changes you need in your life.

Exercise Physiologists/Personal Trainers

Our exercise physiologists/personal trainers hold a bachelor's or master's degree in the area of exercise science. We develop, monitor and evaluate exercise programs for a variety of medical and non-medical populations. Staff provides encouragement, reassurance, and a safe environment to all of our members, as you work toward reaching your fitness goals. If you take advantage of personal training at the Duke Health & Fitness Center, our trainers will work with you individually, tailoring your workout to your specific interests and updating your program as needed to promote continued success.  Our staff aso work in collaboration with medical personnel, such as cardiologists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, massage therapists, dietitians, etc.

Josh received his BS degree as a Health Fitness Specialist from East Carolina University. He is originally from Marshallberg, NC, near Cape Lookout in Carteret County. He has been part of the Duke Health & Fitness Center staff since 2015. Josh previously worked as a Fitness Coach at the YMCA in Nags Head, NC, as an Exercise Specialist/Personal Trainer at Vidant Wellness Center in Greenville, NC and as an Exercise Specialist at Duke Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Durham, NC. Josh has a passion for running/endurance training and helping individuals enjoy exercise as they reach their functional fitness potential. He also enjoys personal training and teaching group exercise classes here at the DHFC.

Kara is a Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist and Wellness Manager at the Duke Health & Fitness Center. She received a B.S. in Nutrition and a M.S. in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University. Upon graduation Kara completed a dietetic internship through Syracuse University. She is a registered dietitian/nutritionist (RDN) through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and also a licensed dietitian/nutritionist (LDN) in the state of North Carolina.  In addition to her clinical expertise in nutrition, Kara is also a Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP) through the American College of Sports Medicine. Kara has worked at the Duke Health & Fitness Center since 2000 as a Lifestyle Counselor, Group Exercise Instructor, and Dietitian and Manager for our Wellness Programming.  She also  worked extensively with different corporate sites, as well as the general community, providing educational and motivational talks about all aspects of health.  She oversees Duke’s Getting on Track Weight Loss Program as well as the Diabetes and Exercise Program.  Kara is a Clinical Associate with Duke University School of Nursing and teaches a yearly course to graduating nurses and nurse practitioners titled “Exercise Interventions for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction.” Kara enjoys working with individuals to promote a holistic, healthy lifestyle, incorporating nutrition, exercise and behavior modification to achieve long-term success and health.

Katie, a native of Raleigh, NC received her BS degree in Exercise and Sports Science from East Carolina University. After graduating from college, she moved to Wilmington where she worked at the Wilmington Athletic Club and New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC).  For three years, she worked in the Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehab program at NHRMC.  In 2003, Katie, her husband, and their children relocated to Hillsborough. Shortly after moving to Hillsborough, she started working at the Center for Living. She worked part-time at Duke Health & Fitness for almost 12 years before shifting to full-time in 2015.

Laura received her MS in Exercise Science after completing her BS in Exercise Physiology at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. While working on her bachelor's degree, Laura completed an internship at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Westchester, NY, where she worked with post cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab, and cancer patients. During her master’s program, Laura completed an internship at the Duke Diet & Fitness Center where she had extensive experience helping clients achieve their weight loss goals and develop a healthy lifestyle. Laura has chosen to focus her career on helping people enhance their overall health and fitness levels, working with clients who would like to live a balanced, healthy and positive lifestyle.
*In collaboration with the Duke Cancer Institute, Laura provides FREE 30-60 minute private, individualized consultations for cancer patients, at the Duke Cancer Center. This service is offered every Wednesday morning from 8:45-11:30a.m. Provider referral and self-referral are accepted.

LeGrant, a native of Washington, D.C., now calls the Raleigh/Durham area home.  A former four sport athlete at Enloe High School in Raleigh, NC, LeGrant went on to obtain a degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Fitness and Wellness from North Carolina Central University. He assisted the North Carolina Central University football team, by working with the receivers and offensive coaching staff after he completed his collegiate career.  Upon graduation he volunteered with Duke Raleigh Wellness and Wake Med Cardiac Rehab Unit. He later worked for Verizon Health and Wellness Center in Cary and the YMCA of the Triangle. LeGrant joined the Duke Health & Fitness Center in 2012, with an emphasis on personal training. During his free time, LeGrant enjoys working out, volunteering at his local church, traveling and trying new foods. LeGrant’s motto is, “It’s not who you are that holds you back; It is who you think you’re not.”

Michelle received her BS in Specialized Studies with a health concentration and a minor in Fitness Management from Edinboro University. Continuing her education after eight years of personal training, she received her MS in Exercise & Wellness Promotion from Slippery Rock University. During graduate school, Michelle worked with the Arthritis Foundation's PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) program and also completed a 16-week internship at the Duke Diet & Fitness Center (DFC), Duke's residential weight loss program. Following graduation, Michelle was employed at DFC for almost four years and then joined the staff Duke Health & Fitness Center. Michelle enjoys personal training and believes exercise is medicine and should be FUNctional. Michelle believes everyBODY is unique and exercise needs to be tailored differently for each person. Michelle has great passion for helping individuals reach their full potential.

Mike received his BS in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University. Continuing his education at Ohio University, he obtained his teaching licensure in Science Education.  During college, Mike worked as a fitness center supervisor, risk reduction trainer, and personal trainer at a facility named WellWorks. He also worked with patients in cardiac rehab at his local hospital, utilizing a program named HeartWorks. Upon graduation, and after teaching in several school systems, Mike decided to focus on his passion for helping individuals reach their exercise performance goals, big or small.  Supporting, motivating and enabling others to live a better overall quality of life is what brings him fulfillment.  As a result, Mike came to the Duke Health & Fitness Center in 2014.  He currently manages the personal training program, with an emphasis on creating individualized exercise programs that are challenging, but achievable. Mike also manages the Mind/Body and Therapeutic Massage programs, with an emphasis on creating activity and experiences that best connects the state of mind with the experiences of the body.  Finally, Mike also uses his skills and talent to create the marketing material that is used by the Fitness Center in our announcements, flyers, newsletter, facebook, etc.

Noah earned his BS degree in Kinesiology from the Pennsylvania State University.  His master's degree is in Clinical and Sport Nutrition from the Florida State University. Noah then worked as a full time Nutrition Professor and part-time researcher and personal trainer at Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University following graduation, until relocating to Durham in 2006. He has been employed with Duke University since 2007. Noah enjoys personal training and teaching exercise classes to help others develop a healthy lifestyle.

Sara, originally from northwest Iowa, received her bachelor’s in Exercise Science with an endorsement for coaching from Northwestern College, in Orange City, Iowa. She moved to Durham as an intern with Duke Health & Fitness Center in January of 2015 and never left! Upon graduating in May 2015, she became a full-time fitness employee at the Fitness Center.   Outside of teaching regular group exercise classes, Sara leads the Parkinson’s program, provides personal training and lifestyle counseling, and works with the EXTEND research study with the Duke Cancer Institute.

Each of our dietitians holds a degree in human nutrition, and each is a registered dietitian/nutritionist through the national Commission on Dietetic Registration (RDN credential) and licensed through the North Carolina Board of Licensure (LDN credential). Our dietitians work with individuals through a variety of health concerns including, but not limited to, weight management, diabetes (types 1, 2 and gestational), heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, digestive issues, food allergies, chronic kidney disease, athletic performance, vegetarianism or simply to feel better and improve energy.

Massage therapists

Our therapists have completed more than 600 hours of training, are nationally certified, and hold North Carolina licenses to practice massage. They combine their knowledge and experience of massage with information provided by the client to create a unique session for each client visit. Various types of massage are usually blended together in a single session.

Kim has been in practice since 1998 and has worked in various hospital settings, in private practice, and is the lead therapist at Duke Health & Fitness Center. She has coordinated massage at Duke Diet and Fitness Center as well.

Kim uses a wide range of techniques to get to the heart of the matter in bodywork. She is well versed in several modalities: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Thai, Reflexology, advanced oncology, and scar tissue management. She specializes in Repetitive Use Injury Therapy ® through Muscle Release Technique. Medical massage for those recovering from surgery or trauma is a particular passion. She is also a second level Reiki practitioner. Kim enjoys co-creating individualized sessions tailored to each client's specific needs.

Kim has a BA in Psychology from Midwestern State University. She received her massage therapy training in 1998 from the Body Therapy Institute (BTI). Kim is a member of AMTA—the American Massage Therapy Association.

Maria is the Director for the Duke Health & Fitness Center. She received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University and a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Indiana University. Maria has worked in a variety of health and wellness settings, including a university recreation center, a hospital-based wellness program and a commercial fitness club.  Her passion is medically-based fitness centers serving individuals that benefit most from healthy lifestyle changes with the clinical support of professionals, which is why she started at Duke Health & Fitness in 1999 as an Exercise Physiologist.

Bryon is a helpful resource of information for all services and events at the Fitness Center.  As the early morning Front Desk person, he helps members navigate everything from memberships, personal training, and special services.  He also coordinates the yearly March Madness Fitness Challenge which encourages members to stay focused on reaching their personal Final Four fitness achievement.
