Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) is a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) . The focus of the initiative is to promote & facilitate collaboration between primary care physicians and other health care providers to prescribe exercise as part of patients' treatment plans. These health care providers then refer patients to EIM Credentialed Exercise Programs and Exercise Professionals, such as the Duke Health & Fitness Center.

The vision of EIM is to:

  1. Have healthcare providers assess every patient's level of physical activity at every clinic visit
  2. Determine if the patient is meeting the U.S. National Physical Activity Guidelines
  3. Provide patients with brief counseling to help him/her meet the guidelines and/or refer the patient to either healthcare or community-based resources for further physical activity (PA) counseling.

At the Duke Health & Fitness Center, our Exercise Physiologists regularly contribute to a collaborative care team for patients seeking services at Duke Health System entities. The Duke Health & Fitness Center is committed to the belief that physical activity is integral in the prevention and treatments of diseases and should be regularly assessed and “treated” as part of all healthcare.
